Our Community Has Outgrown Its Temporary Home

The Need

Two rented rooms and borrowed outdoor spaces

  • No kosher mikvah in the region. The closest is approximately four hours away in Mexico City.
  • No permanent Chabad home suited for prayer, learning, children, seniors, hospitality, kosher food, and community care.
  • Two rented rooms require constant setup and breakdown and limit programs and attendance.
  • Some events have exceeded 80 people, forcing us to limit attendance because of space.
  • Outdoor gatherings remain vulnerable to weather and availability.

The Only One in the Region

A mikvah, four hours closer to home

Today, the nearest kosher mikvah is approximately four hours away in Mexico City. For families in San Miguel and across the Bajío, that distance shapes and limits Jewish life itself.

The new mikvah was designed with rabbinic oversight and will be supervised locally under specialist guidance. It will serve residents and visitors alike: quietly, beautifully, and permanently.

    Who's Building This

    Here to stay, and always on call

    Rabbi Daniel and Raizel Huebner came to San Miguel in 2018 and made it their permanent home. Their home and Chabad's small rented space have welcomed residents, retirees, families, and travelers from around the world. They guide, teach, counsel, host, and respond whenever a community member is in need, day or night, 365 days a year.

    Together they are raising their seven children in San Miguel while building a Jewish family for everyone who walks through the door.

    Why living on site matters

    The entire main floor will serve the community. Upstairs, guest rooms will occupy one side and the family residence the other. Living on site keeps the center genuinely open and welcoming, while supporting hospitality, pastoral availability, security, and continuous building oversight.

    Permanence & Stewardship

    A permanent home, supported by a responsible operating plan

    • Hospitality suites. The hospitality suites are designed to serve visiting families and provide a source of revenue for the center.
    • Operating plan. Owning the center will eliminate the cost and uncertainty of rent. The hospitality suites will provide revenue, while maintenance, staffing, utilities, and other operating expenses will be planned through a separate annual budget.
    • Open financial reporting. Financial reports and annual budgets are available to serious donors and campaign partners.
    • Careful oversight. A building committee and an experienced licensed construction professional oversee the project. Security planning was developed with guidance from the Israeli Embassy security team in Mexico City.

    Obra Gris: The Structure

    $1,350,000 (incl. foundation)

    Completes the structural shell: walls, floors, and roof. Expected to take up to one year.

    Phase Three

    Interiors & Finishes

    $900,000

    The synagogue, social areas, kitchen, classrooms, mikvah, guest rooms, and systems. A $250,000 construction contingency and $357,500 in furnishings complete the budget.

    Are donations tax-deductible?
    Yes. Chabad of SMA Inc. is a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 83-1267778). U.S. donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. We're happy to provide documentation for your records.
    Can I pledge my gift over several years?
    Absolutely. Multi-year pledges are welcome for gifts and dedications at every level. Reach out and we'll arrange a schedule that works for you.
    When is the groundbreaking?
    October 25, 2026. Gifts and dedications committed before the groundbreaking are recognized at the ceremony, and gifts toward the foundation are set into the building itself.
